Tragedy was narrowly averted in the early hours of Thursday after a two-storey building under construction partially collapsed at 5 Modupe Ola Street, Onipetesi Estate, Mangoro, Lagos. Occupants of the structure, including construction workers, escaped death as the building gave way around 5:45 a.m. amid days of light rainfall. Panic swept through the neighborhood as the structure, originally a bungalow being converted into a two-storey building, crumbled from the rear.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, five adult male construction workers were pulled out alive but with varying degrees of injuries. They were quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment, while emergency teams secured the premises to forestall further danger. Controller General Margaret Adeseye confirmed that no lives were lost despite the early morning scare.

Adeseye explained that her team received a distress call at 5:39 a.m. and arrived within minutes, dispatching units from Ikeja and Agege fire stations. She stressed that the situation is now under control, but preliminary findings suggest the ongoing construction, carried out while occupants still lived on the ground floor, may have triggered the collapse. Residents in the area are calling for stricter monitoring of construction sites to prevent a repeat of the near-disaster.
