WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app, is cutting ties with outdated devices. Starting January 1, 2025, the app will stop working on Android smartphones running the decade-old KitKat operating system, impacting millions of users globally.
The Meta-owned platform revealed the move on its FAQ page, citing the need to prioritize newer features and enhanced security. Devices affected include older models from Samsung, Motorola, LG, and HTC.
Additionally, iPhones running iOS 12 will lose support by May 2025, as the app continues its focus on advancing technology.
Affected Devices
Models losing WhatsApp access include:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD
HTC: One X, Desire 500
LG: Nexus 4, Optimus G
Users still on these devices are urged to upgrade their smartphones to continue using WhatsApp’s services.
In another update, WhatsApp introduced the Channels feature for broadcasting messages, hinting at potential monetization while maintaining privacy for admins.
