A tragic stampede on Saturday morning at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama area of Abuja claimed the lives of 10 people, including four children. The incident occurred during a rice and palliatives distribution event, leaving eight others injured, some of whom remain hospitalized. The victims were predominantly women and children who had gathered in large numbers to receive aid.

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as the crowd surged forward, leading to the devastating loss of life. The FCT Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by SP Josephine Adeh, noting that four of the injured have been treated and discharged, while the remaining victims are receiving care. The event highlights the urgent need for improved crowd control and safety measures during large gatherings.

The church, known for its annual charitable contributions to the community, has been left reeling from the tragedy. Authorities have now mandated that all organizations and groups planning public events in the Federal Capital Territory notify the police in advance to allow for adequate security deployment and avoid such avoidable incidents.

The FCT Police Command also warned that non-compliance with this directive would result in organizers being held liable for any future tragedies. Residents are urged to collaborate with the police by adhering to safety guidelines and reporting emergencies through designated hotlines, ensuring such a heartbreaking incident does not repeat itself.
