Ibadan stampede: Tinubu mourns victims, demands investigation
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, which has now claimed over 40 lives. The Chief of Staff to the Oyo State Governor, Mr. Segun Ogunwuyi, confirmed the rising death toll during Governor Seyi Makinde’s birthday celebration in Ebonyi on Thursday. Several other children remain in critical condition following the Wednesday incident at the Islamic High School, Bashorun.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and the people of Oyo State. He also directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede. “In this moment of mourning, the President stands in solidarity with the affected families and prays for peace for the departed souls,” the statement read.
The President emphasized the urgent need for accountability, directing authorities to determine whether negligence or other factors contributed to the tragedy. He called on the Oyo State Government to implement stricter safety regulations, including comprehensive reviews of event safety protocols, regular venue audits, and strict enforcement of safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
Event organizers were also urged to prioritize the safety of attendees, particularly children. “No event should ever compromise the lives or safety of our children,” Tinubu stated, underscoring the need for professional security and logistics planning at public gatherings. The tragedy has sparked widespread calls for accountability and better safety oversight to protect vulnerable populations at public events.
