Supreme Court dismisses suit seeking Tinubu’s removal
In a unanimous decision on Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit seeking to remove President Bola Tinubu from office, labeling the case as “frivolous.”
The suit, filed by Ambrose Owuru, the Hope Democratic Party’s 2019 presidential candidate, alleged that Tinubu’s connections to the CIA and a past drug-related forfeiture made him unfit for office. Owuru urged the court to invoke Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution to disqualify Tinubu, claiming he was under foreign influence.
Led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, the five-member panel not only struck down the claims but also fined Owuru N5 million. The court further barred its Registry from accepting future frivolous filings from the plaintiff.
Owuru, representing himself, argued the case despite his party’s deregistration by INEC. His lawsuit follows a previous N40 million fine imposed by the Court of Appeal in May 2023 for a similar claim aimed at halting Tinubu’s swearing-in.
This verdict cements Tinubu’s position while sending a stern warning against baseless legal pursuits.
