Canadian Woman Sentenced to 11 Years for Smuggling 35kg of Cannabis into Nigeria

Adrienne Munju, a 41-year-old Canadian woman, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for smuggling 35.20 kilograms of a powerful cannabis strain known as “Canadian Loud” into Nigeria. The ruling was delivered by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, following her arrest at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on October 3, 2024, during a passenger clearance check.
According to Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Munju was recruited through an online platform to traffic the drugs, with a promise of 10,000 Canadian dollars upon successful delivery. Financial pressures related to her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada influenced her decision to accept the offer. After her arrest, she confessed to her involvement in the drug smuggling operation.
During the court proceedings, Munju pleaded guilty to the charges, which violated sections of the NDLEA Act. Prosecutors presented compelling evidence, including her confessional statements, two suitcases used to conceal the drugs, and her Canadian passport. Justice Dehinde Dipeolu sentenced her to six years for the first count and five years for the second, with an option to pay a total fine of N100 million.
Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the NDLEA Chairman, commended the agency’s officers for their efforts and highlighted the judiciary’s swift action in the case. He warned that the conviction serves as a strong deterrent to both foreigners and locals considering drug smuggling into Nigeria.
