Kano bans AIT, NTA, other journalists from covering activities
The Kano State Government has withdrawn the accreditation of 14 journalists assigned to cover its activities, in a sudden move that has raised eyebrows. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the spokesperson for Governor Abba Yusuf, who directed the affected reporters to return to their respective organizations for replacements. No official reason was provided, though “recent developments” were mentioned in the notification sent to the press.
Sources familiar with the situation suggest that the decision may have stemmed from mounting tensions between the government and the press. A significant altercation reportedly took place between the Kano Government House press crew and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives during Governor Yusuf’s condolence visit to Jigawa, following a fuel tanker explosion. The dispute over access restrictions at the Jigawa Government House is believed to have played a role in the fallout.
Further complicating matters, insiders claim that another incident occurred when journalists sought an audience with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed during a religious visit to Kano, without prior approval. This, along with concerns over leaks of sensitive information about the government’s dealings with the media, is said to have heightened tensions.
The affected journalists, representing prominent media outlets such as FRCN, ARTV, and NTA, have expressed dismay at the decision. As the situation unfolds, it raises pressing concerns over the state of press freedom in Kano, with many questioning the true motivations behind the government’s actions.
