90 Die, 50 hospitalized in Majiya Town, Jigawa tanker Explosion

A tragic petrol tanker explosion claimed the lives of at least 90 people in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, late Tuesday night. The state’s police spokesperson, Mr. Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the grim toll during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday. He also reported that 50 other individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
The deadly explosion occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Khadija University when the tanker driver, traveling from Kano to Yobe, lost control of the vehicle. The impact led to a massive fire, engulfing the area in flames. Despite efforts by authorities to keep the public away from such accident scenes, onlookers gathered, resulting in the high number of casualties.
Mr. Adam expressed concern over the tendency of people to flock to fuel-related accident sites, disregarding warnings about the dangers. He stressed that the unfortunate loss of life could have been avoided if the crowd had stayed away from the accident site, as urged by police advisories.
A mass burial for the victims is scheduled for Wednesday morning, while the injured continue to receive medical care. The authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.
