The Federal Government has issued a directive mandating foreign airlines operating in Nigeria to source their in-flight meals from local caterers. This move, announced by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, aims to promote indigenous businesses and is set to take effect on January 1, 2025. The order was communicated through a letter signed by Mr. Hassan Ejibunu, Director of the Office of the Permanent Secretary, on behalf of the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo.

In the letter addressed to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Ejibunu conveyed the Minister’s decision, emphasizing that all outbound flights from Nigeria, particularly those operated by foreign airlines, must comply with the new regulation. The NCAA has been instructed to notify airlines and ensure full compliance by the effective date.

This directive, according to aviation experts, could significantly boost the local food and hospitality industry, providing a fresh opportunity for Nigerian caterers to tap into the international aviation market. It is also seen as part of broader efforts to localize services and create economic benefits within the country.

Tunde Moshood, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Aviation, confirmed the authenticity of the directive, adding that it was leaked during a recent courtesy visit by a Lufthansa delegate. The Ministry remains firm on enforcing the rule to strengthen local enterprises and improve the aviation sector.
