Photos: How Super Eagles players slept at Libya airport

Images of Super Eagles players facing dire conditions at a Libyan airport have surfaced, sparking public outrage. The team had traveled to Libya for the second leg of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers after securing a 1-0 victory in Uyo the previous week. However, upon arrival at Al Abaq Airport, they were detained by Libyan authorities, preventing them from reaching their final destination in Benghazi.

The Super Eagles’ flight was unexpectedly rerouted to Al Abaq, a two-hour distance from Benghazi. With no arrangements for onward transportation, the Nigerian squad and accompanying officials were left stranded at the airport for over 15 hours. Players and officials were forced to sleep in uncomfortable spaces, with some resting on airport chairs due to the lack of proper accommodations.

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong shared the team’s plight on social media, posting images that showed the harsh conditions the players faced during the long wait. Many were seen lying on the floor while others attempted to find rest in crowded waiting areas. Despite the ordeal, there were no signs of Libyan officials stepping in to assist the stranded team.

The situation has raised questions about the handling of the Nigerian squad’s travel arrangements and the lack of intervention by the Libyan authorities. As frustration mounts, fans and stakeholders alike are calling for accountability and a swift resolution to ensure the team’s safety and proper treatment.
