Gunmen Assassinate APC Councilorship Candidate in Ogun State
In a shocking display of violence, suspected gunmen brutally murdered Adeyinka Adeleke, an All Progressives Congress (APC) councilorship candidate, in the Jide Jones area of Abeokuta South, Ogun State on Saturday afternoon. The attack, which occurred ahead of the November 16 local government elections, has sent shockwaves throughout the community.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a tinted vehicle, firing shots indiscriminately before singling out Adeleke. The councilorship hopeful, vying to represent Ward 15 in the Abeokuta South Local Government, was gunned down at close range. Horrifyingly, the attackers reportedly went further, striking him with stones to ensure he was dead.
Videos circulating online show Adeleke’s lifeless body, with anguished cries from onlookers filling the air. The area was thrown into chaos, with residents scrambling for safety amid the sound of gunfire. The brazen daylight killing has left the community gripped by fear and uncertainty.
While the motive for the killing remains unclear, some speculate a possible link to cult-related violence. “It happened so suddenly—people are closing their shops and staying indoors out of fear,” a witness shared, describing the palpable tension in the area.
Local police confirmed the incident, stating that Adeleke’s family had taken his body for burial. However, authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the investigation.
As Ogun State braces for the upcoming elections, this tragic event highlights the rising wave of political violence, sparking concerns about the safety of candidates and the electorate alike.
