Presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately reverse the latest fuel price increase imposed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Obi described the hike as “insensitive” and slammed the Federal Government’s policy choices, which he believes are worsening economic hardships for millions of Nigerians.

In a strongly worded statement shared via his verified handle on X, Obi expressed concern over the growing confusion surrounding the roles of regulatory bodies in determining fuel prices. He emphasized the need for urgent action from President Tinubu, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, stating that the nation deserves compassionate leadership during this time of unprecedented economic strain.

“To casually inflict such a draconian measure on the populace from the comfort of an annual vacation amounts to taking the people’s welfare lightly and for granted. A new and more compassionate Nigeria is indeed possible,” Obi declared.

NNPCL’s latest hike comes just days after oil marketers were cleared to lift products from the Dangote Refinery, signaling the end of NNPCL’s monopoly as the sole off-taker. The price surge has sparked outrage, with many Nigerians already grappling with dire economic conditions.
