A devastating cooking gas explosion has left the community of Jamata in Lokoja, Kogi State, in ruins, with over 100 houses reduced to ashes. The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has rendered many families homeless, with properties worth millions of naira lost in the inferno. The explosion not only brought down buildings but also sent shockwaves throughout the community, leaving residents in fear and disbelief.

During a visit to the affected area, Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashir Abubakar Gegu, expressed deep sorrow over the extensive damage. He highlighted the need for caution when handling cooking gas, noting that negligence and failure to adhere to safety guidelines were major contributors to the disaster. “This tragedy could have been avoided if the rules of gas usage were followed,” he lamented.

The explosion has sparked concerns about safety practices in homes across the state, with many residents now questioning the reliability of gas appliances and storage methods. The incident has also highlighted the urgent need for public awareness campaigns on the safe use of cooking gas to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Commissioner Gegu assured the victims of the state government’s commitment to providing both immediate relief and long-term support to help them rebuild their homes and livelihoods. “We are here for you, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that you recover from this tragedy,” he promised, urging the community to stay strong in the face of this unfortunate event.
