Protest: FG labels Russian flag display treason, vows to prosecute sponsors
As hunger protests continue to grip parts of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu held a crucial meeting with security chiefs and heads of paramilitary agencies on Monday, expressing outrage over the appearance of Russian flags during demonstrations.
The National Security Council, echoing Tinubu’s sentiments, condemned the protesters’ actions as a “treasonable offense.” The flags, seen in states like Kano, Plateau, Kaduna, and Zamfara, have raised serious concerns within the government.
Presidency sources revealed that President Tinubu deemed the trend unacceptable and demanded immediate action to curb it. The two-hour meeting also addressed the underlying calls for a change in government by some non-state actors, with security chiefs vowing to maintain peace and order.
Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, briefed the press following the council meeting. He stated that the flying of Russian flags and the resulting chaos marked a dangerous escalation. “The protesters carrying Russian flags have crossed the red line and will face the consequences,” Gen. Musa warned.
He further described the protests as riots characterized by looting and destruction. “Initially, they said it was a peaceful protest, but we have realized that criminals have taken over, causing mayhem,” he explained.
The display of foreign flags within Nigeria’s borders was particularly alarming. “This is totally unacceptable,” Gen. Musa emphasized. “The President has instructed us to ensure that anyone flying foreign flags in Nigeria will be dealt with severely.”
In his remarks, Gen. Musa reiterated the government’s commitment to democracy and warned against any actions pushing for a change in government. “Democracy is what we stand for, and we will defend it. Those flying foreign flags, often kids being used by others, will face serious repercussions,” he stated.
He assured that investigations were underway to identify and prosecute those responsible for these actions. “We have identified areas where these flags were made and are taking serious action against those behind this,” Gen. Musa noted.
The meeting, which included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Inspector General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun, highlighted the unified stance of Nigeria’s security agencies in addressing the current unrest and ensuring the nation’s stability.
