The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has distanced itself from the recent protests where demonstrators were seen waving Russian flags in cities like Abuja and Kano.

In a statement released on Monday, the embassy stated, “The Government of the Russian Federation, as well as any Russian officials, are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way. These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals and do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government.”

The embassy reaffirmed Russia’s policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations, including Nigeria, and condemned any disruptions or acts of violence resulting from the protests.

In response, the Nigerian military and police have taken a hard stance against the display of foreign flags during the demonstrations. After a National Security Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa declared, “Displaying foreign flags during protests is a treasonable offense, and it will be treated as such.”

The Nigerian Police Force reported the arrest of 31 individuals accused of producing and distributing Russian flags, labeling their actions as treasonous and aimed at inciting anarchy.

The protests, initially fueled by economic grievances, have escalated with the inclusion of foreign symbols, prompting Nigerian authorities to act swiftly to uphold national sovereignty and order.
