Police list conditions for 1st August planned protest
In anticipation of the planned nationwide protest on August 1, Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun has outlined strict guidelines to ensure public safety. Speaking to newsmen on Friday in Abuja, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of coordination and transparency from protest organizers.
Protesters must submit detailed information including the proposed route, assembly points, duration of the protest, and contact details of leaders and organizers. This information is crucial for the police to deploy adequate personnel and resources, designate specific routes, and establish clear communication channels to mitigate risks of violence and criminal activities.
“We acknowledge the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly,” Egbetokun stated, “but protest groups must provide these details in the interest of public safety and order.”
He also highlighted concerns about potential hijacking of the protest by criminal elements and emphasized the police’s role in preventing such occurrences. The I-G urged protest groups to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly.
Egbetokun noted that while some groups advocate for peaceful protests, others have hinted at violent undertones, raising concerns about their true intentions. He cited Nigeria’s history of violent protests and the credible intelligence on foreign involvement in the planned protest as reasons for caution.
“We commend patriots who have withdrawn from the protest and those who have spoken out against it at this critical time,” Egbetokun said. He warned that the police will not tolerate any actions that lead to the killing of innocent citizens, destruction of public infrastructure, or looting of private businesses.
Nigerians are urged to think twice before joining any protest group, considering the potential for manipulation by malicious actors.
