Planned protests: Military warns against violence as DSS reveals plot to cause chaos

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) stated that intelligence has revealed plans by “unscrupulous elements” to hijack the upcoming nationwide protests for violent purposes. Maj-Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, indicated that the anticipated violence could lead to a state of anarchy, prompting the military to intervene to prevent the nation from descending into chaos.
Similarly, the Department of State Services (DSS) disclosed a plot by some individuals to infiltrate the planned protests and create chaos. DSS spokesman Dr. Peter Afunanya urged the youth to abandon the protests, highlighting that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, the intention behind these protests is political, aiming to discredit the government and achieve regime change. The DSS identified the funding lines and sponsors of the plot and emphasized using non-violent strategies to resolve the situation.
President Bola Tinubu stressed the importance of sustaining democracy and its institutions, stating that while protests are a part of democracy, the government will not tolerate demonstrations that result in the destruction of life and property. He spoke at the Presidential Villa after receiving a Letter of Credence from the new U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., emphasizing Nigeria’s strong relationship with the U.S. and commitment to democratic values.
Traditional leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III; Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; and Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ortese Ayatse, met with President Tinubu and called on Nigerians to refrain from the planned protests. They expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges and urged patience and engagement with the government.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, warned the federal government against arresting Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for alleged sponsorship of the planned protests. Lawal stated that such an action would have severe consequences and advised against using a forceful approach with the protesters.
Chief Bode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called on the government to ensure the protests do not turn violent. He emphasized the importance of allowing citizens to express their grievances peacefully and reiterated his call for restructuring the nation to reduce the federal government’s influence and empower local governments and states.
