In a stunning display of eloquence and intellect, Lagos State University (LASU) emerged victorious at the prestigious Justice Innocent Umezulike National Debate Competition 2024. This fiercely contested event saw participation from over 20 law faculties across Nigeria, culminating in a thrilling final round between LASU and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The competition, expanded this year to include all undergraduate students from accredited faculties in Nigeria, showcased the exceptional talent and dedication of young debaters. LASU’s winning team, Team Beryl, comprised Oladipupo Olalekan (Speaker), Ajeniya Oluwagbemiga (Speaker), and Musendiku Mulikat (Researcher). Their impressive performance edged out Team Sapphire from Ahmadu Bello University, represented by Elizabeth Chris (Speaker), Yusuf Olatunji (Speaker), Ephraim Edokpa (Researcher), and Mustapha Hauwau (Researcher), who finished as the first runners-up.

Notably, Oladipupo Olalekan, a Computer Science student from LASU, was awarded Best Speaker, further highlighting the multidisciplinary brilliance that defined this year’s competition.

Dr. Cynthia Umezulike and Dr. Victor Umezulike, co-chairs of the foundation, emphasized their commitment to promoting excellence in legal education and research, a mission inspired by their late father, Justice Innocent Umezulike. Justice Umezulike, a renowned Professor of Land and Property Law and the longest-serving Chief Justice in the South East, left a lasting legacy of academic and judicial excellence, which the foundation strives to uphold.

This year’s competition not only honored Justice Umezulike’s legacy but also set a new standard for future debates, inspiring students across Nigeria to pursue excellence in their academic and professional endeavors.
