23 Nigerian electricity workers die on duty in Q1 2024 – NERC
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that 23 electricity workers lost their lives in the first quarter of 2024. This alarming figure highlights the dire safety conditions within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
According to NERC’s latest report, these fatalities occurred across 55 accidents, which also left 31 workers injured. The incidents were primarily caused by wire snaps, unauthorized access, vandalism, unsafe acts or conditions, and falls from height.
A closer look at the data reveals that wire snaps accounted for six deaths and six injuries, while illegal access resulted in five deaths and two injuries. Vandalism led to two deaths and five injuries, unsafe acts and conditions caused ten deaths and twelve injuries, and falls from height resulted in two injuries.
Eko Disco, Benin Disco, Jos Disco, and Aba Power were identified as the most hazardous, with Eko Disco alone reporting 13 casualties. The distribution companies (Discos) accounted for a staggering 96.30% of the total casualties, perpetuating a disturbing trend from the previous quarter.
This report underscores a critical need for improved safety protocols within NESI to prevent further loss of life and injuries among its workers.
