We don’t know what Nigerians are protesting for – APC govs

As the nation braces for a series of nationwide protests from August 1 to August 10, 2024, governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) admit they are in the dark about the reasons behind the planned demonstrations.
Following a closed-door meeting of the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) in Abuja, PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, expressed confusion and urged for dialogue. “We don’t know what they are protesting for. We invite all of them to sit down with us in a room so we can discuss and agree on the issues, what they are, and proffer solutions,” Uzodimma said.
The governors emphasized their commitment to the unity and prosperity of Nigeria, advocating for creating jobs and improving living standards. Uzodimma urged Nigerians to reconsider the protests, citing the country’s current challenges. “We think it is not wise at this moment for any demonstration by any group of persons be it in whatever guise,” he said, highlighting issues like insecurity, food security, and economic recovery.
The governor also called for patience and patriotism, asking citizens to refrain from actions that could destabilize the nation. “We want to advise for the interest of the country and as a show of patriotism, our citizens must take ownership of this country because we have no other country we can call our own outside Nigeria,” Uzodimma added.
The governors’ plea comes amid rising tension and anticipation of the protests, aimed at addressing economic hardships and other grievances. With this call for dialogue, the APC leadership hopes to find a peaceful resolution to the impending unrest.
