Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly apologized after receiving a flood of calls from angry Nigerians over his recent “nightclub” comment directed at Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Last week, during a plenary session, Akpabio told Natasha that the Senate chamber was not a “nightclub” and that she must be recognized before speaking, sparking widespread backlash.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio, who presided over the session, expressed regret for his remark, stating that he never intended to insult or denigrate Senator Natasha. He attributed the social media uproar to the work of political adversaries, emphasizing that his comment was misinterpreted.

The Senate President also revealed that his wife’s phone number was leaked online, resulting in her receiving over 3,000 calls daily. Akpabio himself experienced a deluge of calls that ultimately crashed his phone within three hours.

“In the course of addressing one of my distinguished sisters, I mentioned we are not in a nightclub where people shout above the music. Social media got agog, and my wife received over 2,000 to 3,000 calls daily. My phone also crashed after about three hours,” Akpabio explained, acknowledging the intense public reaction and reiterating his commitment to learning and improvement.
