Court denies Emefiele’s request for medical trip abroad

A High Court in Maitama, FCT, has rejected the plea of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, to travel abroad for a medical examination. Justice Hamza Mu’azu ruled that Emefiele failed to provide evidence of any life-threatening ailment requiring treatment abroad.

Emefiele, who faces multiple charges, including conspiracy and criminal breach of trust, had surrendered his international passport as part of his bail conditions. The court noted that no medical report was presented to support his request and emphasized his ongoing trials in other courts.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed Emefiele’s application, arguing that he posed a flight risk and highlighting the availability of adequate medical care in Nigeria. The court upheld EFCC’s position and dismissed the application, citing a lack of merit.

Emefiele is currently answering to a 20-count charge involving allegations of corruption and forgery totaling $6,230,000.00.
