Dosunmu fire: Lagos to clampdown on unapproved structures, attachments in markets
In a bold move to prioritize safety in Lagos, the state government has launched a crackdown on illegal extensions and attachments sprouting up like wildfire in key markets. Led by the vigilant General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Arc Gbolahan Oki, this enforcement spree aims to reclaim order and prevent tragedies.
This initiative, spurred by the Dosunmu Fire Incident Committee’s recommendations, spearheaded by Commissioner Gbenga Oyerinde, targets rogue constructions obstructing emergency access and risking lives. Oki minced no words, branding these extensions as both a nuisance and a peril, hindering vital rescue operations during crises.
Citing past fire calamities at Mandilas Building and Dosumu Market, Oki underscored the dire consequences of these illegal structures, impeding firefighters’ swift response. With determination, he warned shop and business owners to dismantle these encroachments promptly, affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to upholding law and order.
The enforcement squad, comprising agencies like Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, conducted a sweeping removal operation across key commercial hubs. From Nnamdi Azikiwe Street to bustling markets like Ereko and Balogun, hazardous extensions were dismantled, signaling the state’s firm stance against such recklessness.
This crackdown isn’t just about demolishing structures; it’s a decisive step towards safeguarding lives and restoring the essence of commerce in Lagos. With the government’s resolve unwavering, this enforcement drive promises a safer, more orderly future for all.
