In a move aimed at uplifting the spirits of civil servants and pensioners across Nigeria, the Federal Government has stamped approval on a substantial salary increase ranging between 25% and 35% for employees under the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures. This decision, announced yesterday, also encompasses a pay rise for pensioners within the Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS).

Effective from January 1, 2024, this welcomed adjustment covers a spectrum of salary structures including the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

The gratifying news follows previous increments in tertiary education and health sectors, ensuring equitable treatment across various professional domains. Sectors such as universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and health facilities have already witnessed uplifting changes, setting the stage for broader economic prosperity.

As the nation commemorates Workers Day today, labour leaders emphasize the resilience and sacrifices made by workers amidst challenging times. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar echoed sentiments of solidarity, recognizing the unprecedented challenges faced by Nigerian workers under current policies.

However, amidst acknowledgments of hardship, Deputy National Organizing Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nze Chidi Duru, assured of the government’s commitment to dialogue and mitigation measures, aiming to cushion the impact of evolving policies.

Yet, challenges persist as labour leaders lament ongoing economic burdens and anti-poor policies. Nigerian workers, undeterred by adversity, rally for fair wages and improved living standards, urging the government to prioritize their welfare in policy formulations.

Despite the trials faced, Nigerian workers’ resilience and commitment to national development remain unwavering. Their contributions, recognized by entities like telecommunications giant Globacom, are pivotal in steering the nation towards prosperity.

In recognition of their dedication, the federal government has declared today a public holiday, honoring the labor force’s indispensable role in shaping Nigeria’s future. As the nation marks this occasion, there’s a resounding call for collective efforts towards building a safer, healthier, and more prosperous work environment for all citizens.
