the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully retrieved a whopping $760,000 in advanced school fees from former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. The funds, allegedly sourced from the state’s coffers, were paid for the education of Bello’s children at the American International School, Abuja.

Confirmed by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, this reimbursement marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against financial impropriety. The saga unfolded with dramatic flair as EFCC operatives laid siege to Bello’s residence in Abuja, only to have him spirited away by the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo.

The American International School, Abuja, played a pivotal role, demanding “authentic banking details” for the refund, citing payments totaling $845,852 since September 7, 2021. Despite deductions for services rendered, a substantial sum of $760,910 was repatriated to the EFCC.

Further revelations emerged as EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed that Bello had orchestrated the transfer of $720,000 to a bureau de change before leaving office, ostensibly to prepay his child’s school fees. Olukoyede’s impassioned remarks underscored the gravity of the situation, condemning such actions in a state grappling with economic challenges.

As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on allegations of financial misconduct within the Bello family.
