Shaibu Protests Impeachment, As Godwins Steps in as Deputy Governor

the Edo House of Assembly has voted to impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu following a recommendation by a judicial panel led by retired Justice Stephen Omonua. The decision, made during a tense plenary session in Benin, has sparked outrage and accusations of political maneuvering.

According to Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian, the panel’s report found Shaibu guilty of disclosing government secrets, leading to the unprecedented move to impeach him. Despite Shaibu’s denial of the allegations, a headcount conducted by the Clerk of the House saw 18 out of 19 members present voting in favor of impeachment.

In a bold move, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku directed the Clerk to forward the impeachment copies to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his assent, signaling a swift execution of the decision.

Reacting to his impeachment via a live online video, Shaibu condemned the action as a threat to democracy, attributing it to his gubernatorial ambitions under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He called the charges baseless and denounced the move as political resistance.

As the dust settles, 37-year-old Omobayo Marvelous Godwins from Akoko-Edo Local Council has been sworn in as the new Deputy Governor, adding another layer of intrigue to the unfolding saga.
