TUC Condemns Unacceptable Tariff Hike as Nigerians Lack 20-Hour Daily Power Supply
In a scathing rebuke, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has declared that no Nigerian receives the promised 20 hours of daily power supply, denouncing the recent electricity tariff hike as outrageous. TUC’s Deputy President, Tommy Etim, condemned the move, accusing the government of prioritizing revenue over citizens’ well-being.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) sparked outrage by approving a staggering 250% increase in electricity tariffs for urban households, claiming it’s tied to a 20-hour supply. However, TUC contends that the reality on the ground contradicts this assertion.
Etim lambasted the government’s insensitivity, highlighting the dire socioeconomic challenges faced by Nigerians. “This tariff hike is a recipe for unrest,” he declared, emphasizing that Nigeria remains far from achieving 24-hour electricity supply.
Since January 2024, Nigeria has been plagued by erratic power supply, exacerbating the burdens on citizens already grappling with soaring living costs and stagnant wages.
As the nation reels from this power crisis, TUC’s condemnation resonates as a stark reminder of the government’s failure to prioritize the basic needs of its people over revenue generation.
