Nigeria is Capable of Producing Vaccines –Tinubu Tells Gavi
President Bola Tinubu has rallied Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to join forces with potential Nigerian vaccine manufacturers for a crucial mission: ensuring equitable access to life-saving vaccines for both children and adults across the nation.
During a high-profile meeting at the State House, President Tinubu passionately urged collaboration with Gavi, highlighting the urgent need for local vaccine production amid the challenges faced by developing nations, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and other infectious disease outbreaks.
“We have the talent and capability within our borders to lead in vaccine production, not just for Nigeria but for the entire African continent,” emphasized President Tinubu to Dr. Sania Nishtar, the CEO of Gavi, who assumed office on March 18, 2024, and has been actively engaging with African leaders.
Assuring Gavi of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment, President Tinubu directed key ministers to expedite necessary funds for vaccine procurement, emphasizing, “We intend to bolster our healthcare program and stand ready to collaborate with Gavi.”
Echoing Gavi’s humanitarian mission, President Tinubu underscored the administration’s dedication to ensuring every child receives essential vaccinations, stressing, “No child should be left behind in our fight against preventable diseases.”
Recognizing Dr. Nishtar’s invaluable perspective as a leader from a developing country, Pakistan, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of leveraging her experience for the betterment of children’s health in Nigeria.
In a gesture of appreciation, President Tinubu commended Dr. Nishtar’s visit to Nigeria and pledged to prioritize investments in healthcare, stressing the need for seamless coordination among all levels of government.
With President Tinubu at the forefront, Nigeria is poised to embark on a transformative journey towards self-reliance in vaccine production, ensuring a healthier and more resilient future for its people.
