The West African Examinations Council, Nigeria, announced the release of results for the inaugural Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024–First Series, on Friday. This marks a significant shift from traditional paper-based exams to computer-based ones for private candidates.

According to a statement from the council provided to PUNCH Online, the new CB-WASSCE involved a hybrid approach where all questions were presented on computers. Multiple-choice answers were entered directly into the computer system in real-time, while responses to essay and practical questions were written in booklets provided to candidates.

The examination took place between Wednesday, January 31 and Saturday, February 17, 2024. Analysis of candidates’ performance revealed that out of the 8,139 candidates who took the exam, 3,424 (42.07%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics. Additionally, 2,519 candidates (30.95%) achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

The coordination of examiners and marking of scripts occurred at three venues in Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna from March 1 to 16, 2024, with a total of 459 examiners participating in the process.

Comparing with the 2023 entry figure of 8,738, the 2024 entry figure of 8,362 showed a 4.30% decrease in candidature. The examination was conducted at 140 CBT centres across the country, with 21 candidates registered with varying degrees of Special Needs, including nine visually challenged, two with impaired hearing, and two Albinos. The statement assured that all candidates with special needs received appropriate accommodations during the examination.
