Nigerians Bakers Set for Nationwide Strike as Production Costs Increases – Feb 27
In a resolute stance against the tumultuous economic landscape, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) has issued a clarion call, announcing an impending nationwide strike set to commence on February 27. The announcement, disclosed by Chief Adeniyi Bamidele Gabriel, the AMBCN’s Kogi State Chairman, in Lokoja on Tuesday, underscores the gravity of the challenges faced by the baking industry.
The strike notice, jointly released by AMBCN’s national president, Alhaji Mansur Umar, and national secretary, Mr. Jude Okafor, highlights the crippling effects of soaring prices of essential baking materials such as flour, sugar, yeast, and vegetable oil.
The removal of subsidies and forex deregulation have further exacerbated the situation, compounded by the weight of multiple taxation burdens imposed by federal government agencies like NAFDAC, SON, and NESREA.
As tensions mount, AMBCN’s demands for immediate governmental intervention resonate, emphasizing the urgent need for policy reforms to alleviate the strain on the baking sector and safeguard its pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy.
